Fall Prep – Seal Attic Air Leaks

While many home gardeners focus on spring and summer maintenance, A-1 Insulation is just as important. The season provides an opportunity to prepare for the cold and save money by reducing energy costs.

Often, the best place to start is the attic. Inspect the insulation and plug any holes. Make sure that the vents and any wires coming through your ceiling are sealed, too. Also, seal around any pipes or chimneys that are through the roof. This prevents hot and cold air from moving between rooms through the attic.

Check for duct leaks, and then use caulk or expandable foam to close them up. Leaky attic ducts allow cooled air to escape before it arrives in living spaces, which increases energy bills. This can be a DIY project, but hiring a professional may help you avoid making mistakes that could result in further leaks or wasting energy.

Fall Clean-Up

Do a thorough fall clean-up of annual beds and containers where you’ve grown warm-season plants. This helps to prevent diseases and unwanted reseeding of some annual species in future growing seasons.

Plant Garlic and Onions

This is a good time to plant garlic, onions, and other root vegetables like shallots and potatoes. It’s also time to plant flowering non-edible bulbs like tulips, crocus, and daffodils. If you have a lot of these, consider digging them up after the foliage dies and storing them in wood shavings or sand for winter.
